Cardiff City Hall contains a series of Statues depicting the ‘Heroes of Wales’. Suggestions for suitable subjects were invited from all over Wales and each statue is by a different Sculptor.
The statue of Sir Thomas Picton sculpted by Thomas Mewburn Crook is one of these “Heroes of Wales” sculptures. It is approximately 10 foot high in Serraveza marble and is quite an imposing figure overlooking one of the staircases up to the Marble Hall. This figure, together with the others in the Hall, was unveiled in 1916 by David Lloyd George, then Secretary of State who unveiled the statues. There is, in fact, a painting in the room of the occasion.
